Pi Lo Chun green tea has a hint of sweet floral fragrance, notes of fruity apple and pear that dances with its full body winding in a slightly savory taste. One of the Big 10 Teas of China is also called “blue snail spring.” For such a wispy, feathery leaf, it yields a surprising depth of flavor.
From the coastal Jiangsu province north of Shanghai, this tea is a special grade and is top of the line. Hand-crafted to produce gentle spirals. Downy tips very evident. When the tea leaves are still warm after de-enzyming, small mounds are rolled by hand in three stages. The delicate plant leaves are then transformed into the familiar spiral shape. Legend has it that the name was given by the Emperor Kang Xi in the seventeenth or eighteenth century who felt the steeped tea looked like tiny green snails.
